Trained Teachers and Trained Leaders: Wilson County's Rosenwald Schools

Main Library Assembly Room

In the early 20th century, Booker T. Washington and Sears Roebuck president Julius Rosenwald joined
forces to revolutionize African-American education across the South. Built with a combination of
foundation funds, public monies, and community contributions, Rosenwald schools were potent
expressions of the dreams of Black parents for their children's futures. North Carolina was home to more
Rosenwald schools than any other state, and at least 15 were erected in Wilson County. Discover their
history and legacy.
